Day 3: The coolest spot in the house just GOT EVEN COOLER-Fridge Mats {tutorial}

I was reading a favorite blog of mine {iheartorganizing} when I came across one of their post/giveaways. They were giving away FRIDGE COASTERS, what are fridge coasters you ask,

It’s these…

{via iheartorganizing}

AREN’T they the cutest thing ever!

I wanted some, so I went to the website {www.fridgecoasters.com}

They aren’t badly priced{$25} and you can get some really cool prints.

BUT

I FIGURED I CAN MAKE THESE..but out of what was the question.

Than it hit me…Cheap plastic place mats! I know what your thinking…GENIUS!

I went to walmart- they have cheap mats {$0.99}, but their prints aren’t to die for…enter TARGET {I should’ve know better- I’m a Target Snob}

Target had these for $1.99 a piece, I grabbed 4 {so my fridge coasters were $8 {plus tax}!

When I went it was kind of limited, but the cool thing is..you can always change out yearly or seasonally for super cheap!

  11. 21

What a great idea! I’m heading to Target today!

  12. 23

You’re a genius for thinking of placemats! Duh! Looks awesome!

  13. 25

Lovely! What would you suggest using for us ‘older style’ fridge owners? No double doors here. So my shelves are much wider.

Awesome! Having a “why didn’t I think of that” moment. I hate cleaning the fridge. Thanks for the great idea!

  16. 33

I love it, thank you for the great idea…..

  17. 35

I’d love to know where you got your tea pitcher and how many gallons it holds…I’d like to be able to make tea every other day or every third day, rather than daily!

    • 36

I bought it at Target. They might still have some (they were on sale here last week-seasonal item)it holds 6 quarts. My advice would be to buy a good glass pitcher version-(im looking for one) the nozzle is a pain it doesnt flow fast. I use the Mr. Coffee ice tea maker and I pour two of those pitchers in it. Would you believe that lasts maybe a day in this house? We had to cut down to tea only at dinner time, water any other time.

Try unscrewing the TOP LID so that it can draw air in… that might help if you have not already tried it… I know we have to do that with the liquid laundry detergent that is made with the drain nozzles… Hope that helps the problem… I absolutely LOVE your idea of using the placemats in the refrigerator!! And we use a lot of eggs… I’m loving the egg basket, also… Luckily, I already have one of the baskets since the Dollar Tree is one of my fav stores!! One question- Have you ever had a problem with eggs breaking easier since you started using the basket for them?? Glad I found your blog thru Pinterest!!!

  18. 39

You’re not going to believe this, but went to Target, and the exact same placemats you used are on CLEARANCE for .98 cents a piece!!! I bought 10, which should cover every shelf in my fridge. The same design in tan are also on clearance too.

  19. 41

I like…and I know it will work on my fridge because I have the same fridge….DOUBLE YIPPEE!!

Awesome idea….I didn’t read all the posts but I am thinking you could do different patterns for different seasons….like with Fall coming up and then the holidays..then when you change them out, you wipe them down and store them til the next year….I am a sunflower freak and would love to do this with sunflower place mats….great idea.

  21. 44

That makes your fridge look simply amazing, great idea.

  22. 46

too adorable i am going to target this weekend! just one question, where did you get that tea pitcher?! my roomates and I love love love sweet tea and that would a perfect addition to our fridge.

  23. 48

Love this! I hate cleaning my fridge after sticky spills and drips and often use aluminum foil to line the shelves.

This idea is so pretty and easy to clean! Thanks!

  24. 50

Love this! I went to Target today looking for the mats, and found the exact same ones in a beige color on clearance for $1.38 each! Score!!!! Can’t wait to do this :)

  25. 51

Freezer shelf ideas??? I’m heading to Target in the morning!

  26. 52

I found the SAME mats yesterday at target marked down more! $0.58 each! I appreciate your tuturial…I have the same frig so it really helps!

  27. 53

Hello, I saw this blog via pinterest. I LOVE this. I have been wanting to do this in my fridge for a while THANK YOU for showing this. On a side note. I went to my local Target, and found the exact placemats( which I LOVE) for $.58!!! OMG I am going back to get the other four.

  28. 54

I think it’s awesome! I saw those fridge mats, too. I like the idea, but I love your money saving idea. I think I’ll be making a trip to Target tomorrow.
    Thanks for the idea.

  29. 55

I love this idea! It’s definitely on my To Do list. Anything that makes cleaning the fridge easier is tops in my book.

  30. 56

Found this idea via Pinterest. (It did take some doing to track you down, but I’m glad I did!) This is such a great idea. Wonder why I didn’t think of it before hand. Thanks for sharing. I will have to check out Target next time I’m there since my fridge is begging for a makeover!

  31. 58

I so totally did this like 2 days after seeing your post! I found the exact mats in Target AND on clearance! Lucky for me cause I needed 10 of them to do my fridge!

  32. 59

I always see these mats at Target, Walmart, DollarTree and although they’re super cute I didn’t think my Husband would want to rock them on our Dining room table. But if they’re in the fridge he can’t complain. What a terrific idea and I’ll be featuring it on my blog: http://www.foxandaparasol.com. Keep them coming!

  33. 60

I loved the idea of the shelf liners for my fridge, but I just used vinyl shelf liner to make mine. One role of gingham print and I have a great-looking fridge that is easy to keep clean. Like your idea of placemats too.

  34. 61

I love it, but I’m really digging the eggs in the basket. I will be on the lookout for a cute basket now!

  35. 63

How do you keep them from sliding around when your taking stuff in/out of fridge?

  36. 65

love your idea!!!! cant wait to try it…. have the same refrigerator…
what were we thinking when we bought it…have no room in it….arghhhhhhhhh!!!!!

    • 66

Yes, they aren’t the biggest {it was the builders who picked}. I starting shopping weekly instead of every two weeks, and it’s been working out for me.

  37. 67

This is a great idea! I just moved into a new home and was looking for ideas to keep my new fridge nice and clean. I will definitely make these. Thanks for sharing this idea!

  38. 68

I so totally love this idea. I will be looking for some cool placemats this weekend! Thank you for sharing.

The moment I saw this on Pinterest, I knew it was for me. Went to Walmart today, bought some really cute mats with vegie photos (wouldn’t use them on my table, but perfect for frig). Came home, and it only took 30 minutes to do (hubby cut them to size). Have a question: our top and middle shelves are not glass, they are wire. Will the air circulate throughout with the mats blocking air flow? Just wondering. Thanks for your creative mind!! :)

  40. 72

    FANTASTIC!

  41. 73

What about non-stick shelf liners/contact paper?

  42. 74

LOVE this idea!! Found it on Pintrest! I wonder if using the shelf liners you can buy would work out. Things maybe wouldn’t slide as easy, but they’re super washable.

  43. 75

I am in love with this! I shared this on my blog. If this wasn’t ok, please let me know so I can remove you immediately!

Great idea! So much prettier than Press N Seal on each shelf (like I currently do).

Found this through Pinterest. Well kind of. Someone pinned only the image of your DIY tutorial. I’m so glad you had your URL on your tutorial photo so I could find this! :)

  45. 79

I just found your picture of this on Pinterest. What a fantastic idea! Thank you! I have TWO fridges, so your idea is truly a blessing for me at cleaning time. Thank you so for sharing.
